Finisterra Annual Lecture 2024 and Best Paper Award 2023
Finisterra - Portuguese Journal of Geography is pleased to invite you to participate in the event that brings together the 2024 Annual Lesson and the award ceremony for the Best Paper of the Year 2023.
The session will take place on October 17, 2024, at 5:00 pm, at the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the University of Lisbon, in a hybrid format (presential and online). This year's Annual Lecture entitled “Mapeo de desastres: una perspectiva forense-geográfica sobre las causas de fondo y los impulsores del riesgo de desastre” will be attended by Irasema Alcántara-Ayala. With a degree in geography from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), a PhD in geography from King’s College, London, and postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, Irasema teaches at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters and serves as a researcher at the UNAM Institute of Geography, where she has also served as director.
Her research focuses primarily on slope instability and natural disaster risk, promoting the integration of science, public policies, and risk management. She has over 200 publications and has participated in more than 100 international conferences. She’s a member of important scientific committees, such as the UNESCO International Geoscience Programme and the World Weather Research Programme.
In this conference, Irasema proposes an approach that combines forensic investigation and geographical analysis to identify the underlying causes of disaster risk, revealing how historical, social, and economic factors increase vulnerability. By integrating this knowledge into management strategies, it becomes possible to mitigate the impacts of disasters. This approach strengthens communities and guides the formulation of more effective public policies.
